Lyrics
The Good in a Man
His breath in my ear, a megaphone
Can’t sleep in this house when I’m not alone
He says I should be grateful, there’s a roof over my head
But I wish the pounding rain would drown this bed
Mama said, you're too damn proud
You’d best forgive
Keep your head bowed and
Look for the good in a man
He was a mystery, silent and strong
His secrets spilled out before too long
He swore that he loves me, maybe there’s still hope
But every single time is a tightening of the rope
Mama said, you're too damn proud
You’d best forgive
Keep your head bowed and
Look for the good in a man
I’ve always done what I’ve been told, but Mama, these nights have grown so cold
Will you try to understand, I must take my life back into my own hands?
Mama said, you're too damn proud
You’d best forgive
Keep your head bowed and
Look for the good in a man
Ordinary Magic
I watch you in the mirror
You smile when you catch my eye
Gather your dark hair and pin it high
Each simple gesture
The more of your ways I see
The more of your ways I learn I need
All of love I thought I knew
Called into question next to you
Every time you say my name
It’s ordinary magic
My world will never be the same
With your ordinary magic
What was life before you?
Trails of gardenia spice
Drinking dry white wine over ice
You hum when you’re nervous
There’s no need to worry now
Whatever was missing has been found
All of love I thought I knew
Called into question next to you
Every time you say my name
It’s ordinary magic
My world will never be the same
With your ordinary magic
Extraordinary magic….
Bring You the River
I find you in the kitchen, golden light pouring in
Lines on your face, you didn’t sleep again
Absent fingers tap a cold coffee cup
You’re far away, lost in what kept you up
I would bring you the river
Give you the answer to your prayer
I would bring you the river
If I could find it anywhere
You're stuck on memories, us growing up
If you had done things better, would it be enough?
Please don’t pin these days on long dead butterflies
You always said, only God knows why
I would bring you the river
Give you the answer to your prayer
I would bring you the river
If I could find it anywhere
You're the one who always gets me through
How can I help you, tell me what to do
I would do the impossible for you
I would do the impossible for you
I would bring you the river
Give you the answer to your prayer
I would bring you the river
If I could find it anywhere
If I could find it anywhere
If I could find it anywhere
Ghosts of Route 66
I was driving fast and straight through the belly of the plains
When I passed a town that used to have a name
The demons of the past were ridin hot on my trail
So I pulled off for a drink to ease my mind
Been runnin hot and hard so long
Headlights split the night down the empty strip of road
Tired motels groaning vacancy
Million miles away from the city’s hungry thieves
Surprised to find that I can finally breathe
Some neon up ahead draws me in
How would it feel to break the wheel
Give up my place in line
It’s come down to this, I’m dancing with
With the Ghosts of Route 66
No one bats an eye when I take a sticky seat
Good thing I like to drink my whiskey neat
This place ain’t seen a crowd since the early Reagan years
I wonder what’s still left to catch the dust
And who has stayed behind to watch the fade
I’ve been looking for a place where I can rest my weary soul
Where all the ones I’ve hurt can let me go
There’s somethin bout this town and the way the people sigh
Livin with the bones of better times
The kind of place you go to slip away
How would it feel to break the wheel
Give up my place in line
It’s come down to this, I’m dancing with
With the Ghosts of Route 66
Water From a Stone
This is the beginning
Of beginning again
Leave all my comforts
To search within
Out in the desert
I try to speak
Does God hear prayers
From a voice this weak?
I’ve begged the heavens
Drained the sea
No fresh sources
Flow for me
Just water from a stone
Just water from a stone
I often wonder
About what I want
I often dream of
The things I’ve lost
My body’s aching
I’m thirsty for youth
But time’s a traitor
So I’ll settle for truth
I’ve begged the heavens
Drained the sea
No fresh sources
Flow for me
Just water from a stone
Just water from a stone
A journey all my own
Water from a stone
Can I make it to the other side?
Will a blood moon turn the riptide?
I’ve begged the heavens
Drained the sea
No fresh sources
Flow for me
Just water from a stone
Just water from a stone
A journey all my own
Water from a stone
This is the beginning
Of beginning again
